The Sweet Potato Community, which originated from the Beijing Huajiadi basement renovation project in 2013 and was officially founded in 2015, has now produced four “sweet potato” projects. By designing, transforming, and reusing idle space within the community, it has created an “equal, warm, fun, and innovative” shared space that allows many people to realize their self-worth at their doorstep. It was honored as one of the Best Beazley Designs in the World in 2018 and has won DFA Asia’s Most Influential Design Award. ZHOU Zishu, the creator of the Sweet Potato Community, methodically presented the community's origins, development history, architectural concept, functional structure, working method, operational principles, values, and compelling narrative. In addition, the book also includes the stories of thirty-four pertinent individuals, including basement residents, community residents, government workers, designers, and scholars.
