The inaugural issue of Cybernetics and Intelligence, a global open access journal hosted by Tsinghua University and published by Tsinghua University Press, was officially released in March 2026 on both IEEE Xplore and SciOpen. This marks the official launch of an international academic publication dedicated to the cutting-edge interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cybernetics and intelligence science.
About the Journal
The founding philosophy of Cybernetics and Intelligence stems from the rich legacy of cybernetics. As early as the 1940s, Norbert Wiener proposed the concept of “cybernetics”, revealing the fundamental analogy between the human brain and computers and opening the door to modern automation science and engineering. Today, the discipline of automation is built on three pillars—cybernetics, information theory, and systems theory—and has been applied in industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, services, and energy systems.
The journal aims to explore the deep connections between cybernetics and intelligence, covering the following research topics: systems engineering models, theories and methodologies; machine intelligence; reinforcement learning; pattern recognition; intelligent buildings; smart grids; industrial intelligence; autonomous driving; brain-inspired computing; automatic control; digital twins; and cybersecurity.
Editorial Team
The journal is led by Professor ZHANG Tao as Editor-in-Chief and Professor JIA Qingshan as Executive Editor-in-Chief. Professor ZHANG Tao serves as Director of the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University, Director of the Beijing Key Laboratory of Embodied Intelligent Systems, and President of the Institute for Embodied Intelligence and Robotics at Tsinghua University.

Professor ZHANG Tao is an IEEE Fellow, IET Fellow, Fellow and Council Member of the Chinese Association of Automation, and Executive Director of the China Simulation Federation. His main research interests include robotics, artificial intelligence, and control theory.

Professor JIA Qingshan is a Tenured Professor at Tsinghua University, Director of the Institute of Systems Engineering in the Department of Automation, and Deputy Director of the Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems.
Highlights of the Inaugural Issue
The inaugural issue (Volume 1, Issue 1) features a total of 6 papers, covering a diverse range of cutting-edge directions—from bio-informatics and quantum control to large model reasoning and computer vision. These works demonstrate the broad vision and in-depth interdisciplinary nature of the field of control and intelligence.
