June 24, 2026

The awarding ceremony of the 19th Special Book Award of China—the highest honor in China's publishing industry for international contributors—was held in Beijing on June 16. Professor Edward L. Shaughnessy, a key author of Tsinghua University Press (TUP) and a renowned American sinologist, was honored in the author category.

Professor Shaughnessy serves as the editor-in-chief of The Tsinghua University Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts: Studies and Translations, a flagship publishing project of TUP, and is the author of the series' first two volumes. He is currently the Lorraine J. and Herrlee G. Creel Distinguished Service Professor in Early Chinese Studies in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago, Director of the Creel Center for Chinese Paleography and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University's Research and Conservation Center for Unearthed Texts.

He has long been devoted to research on pre-Qin history, paleography, unearthed texts, and Confucian classics, spanning the entire spectrum of ancient Chinese studies and producing influential work in classics such as the I Ching (also known as the Classic of Changes), the Shang Shu (also known as the Book of Documents), and the Shi Jing (or Classic of Poetry), as well as in unearthed texts including oracle-bone inscriptions, bronze inscriptions, and bamboo and silk manuscripts.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Professor Shaughnessy and look forward to continuing our partnership with him to write a new chapter of academic exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and world civilizations.

About The Tsinghua University Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts: Studies and Translations

In July 2008, Tsinghua University acquired a batch of Warring States-period bamboo slips, known as the Tsinghua Bamboo Manuscripts. A large portion of the manuscripts consists of early classical and historical texts, some of which correspond to transmitted classics such as the Shang Shu, while many others are previously unknown works that had been lost for over 2,000 years. These manuscripts are of immense value for understanding pre-Qin classical texts and for reconstructing early Chinese history.

The Tsinghua University Warring States Bamboo Manuscripts: Studies and Translations is a collaborative project between a Chinese team led by Professor HUANG Dekuan, Director of Tsinghua University's Research and Conservation Center for Unearthed Texts, and a translation team headed by Professor Shaughnessy, with a planned total of 18 volumes.

The series integrates the original bamboo slip texts, clerical transcriptions, modern Chinese characters, and English translations, filling a gap in international English-language research on the Tsinghua bamboo manuscripts, promoting the dissemination of findings on China's excavated texts, and offering an important reference for worldwide scholars engaged in the study of early Chinese civilization.
